AS EVERY actor knows, it is easy to be typecast. The role assigned to Europe for the past decade has been that of sclerotic under-achiever: a slow-growing, work-shy and ageing continent that is destined to be left behind by the United States, China and India. Unnoticed by the audience, Europe, under new political leadership first in Germany and Italy and now in France and Britain, has changed the plot. Since the end of 2006 euro-area GDP has outpaced America's: in 2007, it should grow by 2.7%, ahead of both America and Japan. The euro is at new highs against the dollar and the yen. Unemployment has fallen to 7%, the lowest since the euro started life in 1999...

Manifesto aos editores do Record On-line

Algo que sempre me intrigou foram os comentários dos leitores da edição On-line do Record às notícias que vão aparecendo no site. Qualquer que seja o assunto, mesmo que se trate de um clube japonês, acaba invariavelmente por descambar numa guerra de palavras, entre Sportinguistas, Benfiquistas e Portistas. A luta é sempre feroz mas os temas são monótonos: "O meu jogador é melhor que o teu", O meu clube vai ser campeão", "Aquela arbitragem de há 2 anos atrás" são os mais apreciados, entre os que vão aparecendo. Porém no meio tanta divergência de opiniões, existe um inimigo comum: a gramática da Língua Portuguesa. Tal situação é sempre desejável, pois um ponto de concórdia entre rivais leva a que a luta seja mais saudável.

Também fico decepcionado quanto ao monopólio dos "3 grandes" nesta matéria, pois sou do Belenenses. Por vezes sinto a tentação de ir para a guerra e escrever algo como "Se o Ricardo Rocha saiu por 6 milhões, o Nivaldo só saía por 60" ou "Antchouet, é bem feito que tenhas ficado no banco a época toda depois de teres tratado o Belém dessa maneira". Mas abstenho-me sempre, com medo que um batalhão de vermelhos, verdes ou azuis e brancos comece a trocar opiniões, fazendo com que o meu comentário vá parar àquelas zonas do site que ninguém visita.

Por estas razões, venho, por este meio, cordialmente solicitar aos editores do Record On-line que, abram um espaço no site onde nós, adeptos de clubes pequenos, possamos postar os nossos comentários, aos quais também temos direito, dentro da nossa liberdade de expressão. Ou então que limitem os comentadores dos 3 grandes, não fazendo censura aos mesmos está claro, mas "regulando" a sua actividade. Mais ou menos como diria o meu saudoso amigo Marcelo:

-Liberdade de expressão? - SIM! - Parvoíce a mais? - NADA!

Chegou a hora... Tudo o que é bom tem um fim. Custa-me imenso deixar tudo isto. quando estava a fazer a mala sozinho é que senti tudo a acabar e a deixar para traz uma casa vazia que foi o palco das melhores coisas da minha vida e também abrigo das pessoas que, para além de amigos, foram a minha família e que hei-de levar no coração para sempre. Obrigado por tudo! Por me aturares, pelas bebedeiras e pelas gajas e acima de tudo por seres meu amigo... Sabes que estou sempre aqui para ti sempre que precisares. Não lido bem com despedidas e ainda não consegui parar de chorar. O vazio do fim

Há dias pensei nos últimos 8 meses de Erasmus que passei aqui na Polónia e perguntei-me porque é que tudo o que é bom passa e acaba depressa. Pensamento vulgar na cabeça de todos que vivem momentos que marcam a nossa existência e nos trouxeram felicidade.

Tentei explicar tal a mim mesmo sem conseguir chegar a uma conclusão. Sinto este período a chegar ao fim e tento esconder-me da tristeza que é abandonar um lugar onde fomos felizes. Por vezes consigo ir parar a algum lugar mais ameno, outras o vazio que se vai criando no estômago ajuda a apertar o nó na garganta e o sangue corre mais espesso nas veias e doi. Todos se alimentam sem cessar pela falta das pessoas com que partilhei a minha querida Varsóvia. Não se afigura facil voltar à realidade. Cada vez que fecho os olhos fico com vertigens, o corpo treme e as caras de todos viajam na minha cabeça distorcidas pela velocidade. O barulho ensurdecedor dos seus sorrisos mistura-se explodindo num som infernal que ecoa pela cabeça.

A cidade parece-me agora vazia. Vejo os lugares e associo-os imediatamente a cada um daqueles que marcou a minha aventura por terras Polacas. Aquilo que fizemos, que dissemos, que prometemos daria material suficiente para escrever uma enciclopédia de momentos fortuitos.

Parece este sofrimento digno de um Petrarca que eternaliza o seu amor platónico sabendo-o impossível de viver. Tal não deveria ser para tanto e ás vezes envergonho-me da minha própria maneira de viver o fim, como se fim fosse uma tragédia. Sensibilidade é uma coisa, falta de inteligência é outra.

Olhar com tristeza e não com a alegria devida para o meu Erasmus é encostar a felicidade ao passado e deixar sem glória um ano fantástico.

Por agora já que ainda não o consegui, fico com as suas caras, as mesmas que me preenchem a memória.

Alinghi wins the 32nd Edition of the America´s Cup

A stunning regatta, ended up with the victory coming on to the Suiss sindicate side, allowing them to win, for the second time in a row, the Holly Grail of Yachting.

With an amazing start from both crews, Alinghi was able to gain a 7 seconds margin on the first up-wind mark. New Zealand was not in the mood to call it a day and took the lead, rounding mark 2 with a 14 seconds advance. But on the second time they came against the wind, Ed Baird and his team pulled a rabbit out of their hats, starting the last leeward on the first place after gaining 26 seconds in one single leg. But the elements had saved the best for the last course. With the wind dropping to very light, the Kiwis had the advantage on their side. Their recovering path led them to finish only one sinlge second behind the Suiss. 10 more meters and perhaps we would still had a few more races to watch.

In the end, this was one of the best editions of the cup, with very similar boats and leveled crew quality, that raced head to head until the last moment giving something exciting for the audience to see.

32nd edition of the America´s Cup

The 32nd America´s Cup edition is on fire, like we haven't seen for many years. On the last two challanges, the winners crushed their opponents with stunning victories of 5-0. (New Zealand Team won against the Italian Sindicate, Prada Challange in 2000 and Team Allinghi beated New Zealand in 2003) If these successes were a demonstration of supremcy in the art of sailing, they sure weren´t much fun for those watching it.

But this time the story has changed. War is finally at seas with the cup being challenged leg by leg, tackle by tackle. For now Team Allinghi has a two win advantage over their opponents leading by 4-2. One more win for the Swiss syndicate and it's game over for Tem New Zealand, since the final is disputed at the best of 9 races. But no one comes from the far side of the world, specially after such a previous humiliating defeat at home in 2003, to let the most prestigious sailing trophy in the same hands. Tomorrow it´s D-day in the world of sailing and I'll make sure I´ll be watching it.

And what does this matter for Portugal? Switzerland does not have sea and the last time the organization chose a place, they went for Valencia, in Spain. It is time for us to start thinking about taking it to Portugal in the moment Team Allinghi wins.

We have more constant and better conditions for the practice of sailing in Cascais, Vilamoura or even Porto than Valencia, which can be an advantage to win the host of such a huge event

The America's Cup is the most famous and most prestigious regatta and Match Race in the sport of sailing, and the oldest active trophy in international sport, predating the Modern Olympics by 45 years. The sport attracts top sailors and yacht designers because of its long history and prestige as the “Holy Grail” of yachting. Although the most salient aspect of the regatta is its yacht races, it is also a test of boat design, sail design, fundraising, and management skills. The cup, originally offered as the Royal Yacht Squadron cup, is now named after the first yacht to win the trophy, the schooner America. The trophy remained in the hands of the New York Yacht Club of the United States from 1852 or 1857 (when the syndicate that won the Cup donated the trophy to the club) until 1983 when the Cup was won by the challenger, Australia II of Australia, ending the longest winning streak in the history of sport. The skipper of Australia II, John Bertrand, was quoted in saying, “This puts yacht racing back on the map!”
The America’s Cup regatta is a challenge-driven yacht series that currently involves a best-of-nine series of match racing (a duel between two boats). Since the 1992 match, the regatta has been sailed with the International America’s Cup Class (IACC) sloop, a monohull boat that has an average length of about 75 feet (23 m). Any challenger who meets the requirements specified in the Deed of Gift, which governs the regatta, has the right to challenge the yacht club that holds the Cup. Since 1983, Louis Vuitton has sponsored the Louis Vuitton Cup as a prize for the winner of the challenger selection series (which was inaugurated for the 1970 match). The America’s Cup is a race between the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup and the current holder. If the challenging team wins the cup, the cup’s ownership is transferred from the defender’s yacht club to the winning team’s yacht club.
